The Virtual Sign Language Interpreter

Our Mission

11 million Americans and 466 million people in the world are Deaf or deal with hearing loss problems, for them, sign language is often times their main method of communication. It is a daily challenge for people within the non-speaking and non-hearing communities to communicate with others since most people do not know sign language. This makes basic communication nearly impossible and extremely inefficient for both parties. As a team, our mission is to create an app that uses machine learning to convert visual sign language cues using a phone or tablet camera to text. We want to create a visual language translation app that makes communication with Deaf people easier when one person does not know sign language and it is inefficient to try to translate. As of right now, we are working on a program on the computer and improving on it through machine learning.

Features

The Sign-In app will take visual American sign language cues and translate it to English text. Our app will use machine learning AI software to do the image recognition and classification. It's essentially like Google Translate but for American sign language. As of right now, the program that we created on the computer using Python can recognize all twenty six letters of the American Sign Language alphabet, hence it will be able to translate words letter by letter. However, it does not yet recognize common phrases and sentences in American Sign Language. Due to the time constraints, we have yet to download such files.

What is our next step? Well, as a team, we hope to improve on the efficiency of the app by training the program to recognize more than just individual letters of the alphabet. We plan to include everyday phrases like "How are you?" and "My name is -insert name-". Additionally, we would like to add a learning section to help close the gap between the Deaf and hearing communities. By allowing ASL learners to practice with the app, they can receive feedback in real time on whether their sign language cues are recognizable or not. Keeping our goal of improving communication between the Deaf community and hearing community, we definitely want to continue updating our app in the future as well.
